New Western Region OA Section Alignments Issued

Posted on August 15th, 2008 in BSA Info,Hobby News,OA,Section Conclaves by ramore

Out today is the new re-alignment of OA sections for the Western Region.

See the following PDF:

wregoa_08.pdf

There will be six (6) areas with a total of fourteen (14) sections. I’m not sure how many there are currently. This covers 23,748 OA members.

I know Central region has reconfigured its Areas and my guess is the other regions as well. This is probably in response to a re-org in Western Region. I’m sure there is some bouncing around for some lodges. Locally here, Toledo, Ohio (Erie Shores Council, Tindeuchen Lodge) was in our Area and Section, then out of our Area and Section and are now back in our Area but I don’t yet know about section. Always confusing. Hopefully it helps. I’m sure the OA will adapt.

    (1) Yes, areas are being reconfigured in all four regions. For some time, urban/metro councils were classed separately from the rest and had different area directors. Now they are switching back to having area directors responsible for geographically contiguous groups of councils, including metro and non-metro councils together.

    (2) Very odd (new?) numbering system on that PDF–areas are lettered and sections numbered, rather than vice versa. So unlike (also in the new system) Area NE-6 being broken down into Section NE-6A and NE-6B, you have Area W-A broken into Section W-A1 and W-A2. I don’t recall seeing this scheme used before.

The list that was posted is complete, except for the names of the section-areas, which are only preliminary. The lettered areas were used in their region’s planning for the council realignment, but these are not the final designators.

I am assuming that they will use W-1A, etc., just like in the last version of the FOG that I’ve seen.

Although the new areas for the Central Region have been announced, their section realignment has been postponed until next year.

[…] As a result, the OA sections within that region have changed.   Roy More wrote about this on his blog almost two weeks ago but I did not see it until […]

I am not curently active with the O/A,but was very involved in the early 60’s through about 1980.I had assignments at the chapter through region levels.I was approached to serve on the national committee, but wasn’t able to do so because of other personal obligations.
As I recall up until 1972 the 12 regions were numbered, and their areas were denoted by letters;I was located in area 12-A in southern California. Then the regions were reduced in number to six(later four),and the areas were designated by numbers.Since the areas were now much larger the section concept was added;they were designated by letters. My part of the country became section W4B.
To my knowledge, while the BSA uses areas for various program purposes, the section concept has been used only by the O/A.
One of my other assignments has been the resident camp visitations, which have been organized by areas. If that continues it appears our teams may be assigned to visits from Hawaii to Texas.
