Info on Lekau 77 dancer flaps

Posted on April 27th, 2007 in OA by dhoffard

On of the things the internet helps with is it facilitates information sharing, duh. Well with all of our eBay listings we often get additional information about items we are listing. This is typically coming from straight from original sources. We’ve never had this before. I thought I would post a couple here that we recently received.

The first item is the dancer flaps from Lekau Lodge 77 out of New Jersey. lekau77s.JPG

Stephen J. Taylor writes

“This pre-FDL lodge flap from Lekau Lodge #77 was designed when I was Lodge Chief there in 1971-72. Very few were issued. If I recall correctly they were for new Brotherhood Members to boost our Ordeal to Brotherhood conversion rate and meant to honor Jim Trout, the Lodge’s champion hoop dancer. “

Quilshan 325 really a Cub day camp patch

We listed the patch below as being an activity patch from lodge 325 because of the “potlatch” in the wording. This has been used for decades by several of the California lodges as the name for their events.

This item is actually a cub day camp item for camp potlatch. I attended this as a youth.

Hobby Trends – A review of 2006

Nearly every year since 1991 I have written a ‘Year in Review’ article either as part of our prices realized book or as a submission to the International Scout Collectors Association (ISCA) journal.

Here’s this year’s in PDF.

For the rest of the article including category by category reviews, see the upcoming International Scout Collectors Association journal. Go to www.scouttrader.org for membership information.

A Good Day Prayer

This was the invocation at my Rotary meeting last week. This being Monday and all, I felt it worth repeating (I know its not patches but we can cover other things here as well.)

“So far today, God, I’ve done all right. I haven’t lost my temper, haven’t been greedy, nasty or self-centered. I am really proud of myself. But in a few minutes, God, I’m really going to need some help, because then I am going to get out of bed.”

Weeki Wachee Scout Days

We literally handle hundreds of thousands of patches each year. Still, we come across ones we’ve never before seen. I don’t know what it is or where its from but I can’t think of another Scout patch with a mermaid on it. Sounds like they must have had some fun program-type Scouters in this council.

Where oh where is Camp Morgan?

Posted on April 6th, 2007 in Camps,What's Its by dhoffard

I’ve got a category for “what’s its.” I think I need to create one for “where’s its.” See the following pictures. Clearly this is a BSA camp. It would appear to be from Region 7 as the merit badge sash has a 1942 Region 7 First Aid meet patch on it (although it could be from a neighboring state and the Scout went to this event in Region 7.) The problem is, no one has yet figured out where it is from. Can you help?

No BSA Patrol Medallions – Round Series from 1930s

Posted on April 6th, 2007 in Insignia by ramore

We have had many interesting things come through our hands over the years. As we go through some of our archives, I thought I would post some to our blog for your viewing pleasure.

Pictured here and in the following links is a complete set of the 1930s no BSA round felt patrol medallions . These came after the square felt patrol medallions which were an experiment out of Washington, DC in the early 1930s. They proved to be more popular than the patrol ribbons, also called patrol flashes, that were in use previously. The square patrol medallions were not used everywhere. The round ones were. There may be only two or three complete collections of these in the country. These pictures are from Bernie Miller’s collection. Can you name them all? I think the pictures have them in alphabetical order.
